Why should I hire a licensed electrician?
While many areas allow a homeowner to do their own electrical work if they have the correct permits and get the work inspected by the proper authorities. If you are unfamiliar with the hazards of electrical work it is a good idea to leave it to the experts. A licensed electrician will have studied national and local electrical codes and received extensive training and experience that allows them to work safely on a wide range of electrical systems. If you would like a professional estimate for electrical work, call us and make an appointment with Mr. Electric today.
What is a GFCI Receptacle?
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. It is a receptacle designed to protect electrical devices in use near water. It can detect when power is going where it shouldn’t, and shut off to prevent electric shock. Many electrical codes specify that GFCI receptacles should be used in areas where water is commonly present, such as bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor areas, and laundry rooms.
GFCI receptacles should be tested monthly to ensure proper operation. This is done simply by pressing the test button on the device or outlet to mate sure that it turns off, and then pressing the reset button to turn it back on. If either button fails to function, then it is time to install a replacement.
What is the difference between aluminum and copper wiring?
Aluminum wiring was used in homes constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The wiring itself is not dangerous, however if it is connected incorrectly to outlets, fixtures, or switches it can deteriorate over time. These problems are not present in standard copper wiring. If you have concerns about aluminum wiring in your business or home, call Mr. Electric today and have one of our licensed electricians preform an inspection.
What is knob and tube wiring?
Knob and tube, also known as “open wiring.” was an early standardized type of electrical wiring in residential and commercial buildings. It was mostly phased out by the 1940s. It consists of copper wiring with limited insulation that passes through support structures in the wall using insulated porcelain fittings, for which it is named.
Knob and tube wiring is seriously outdated, and there is a tendency for the insulation to dry out and become brittle and crack. If it falls off the raw wires can be exposed to the inside of your walls, presenting a danger of electrical shocks, and a potential fire hazard.
This style of wiring was installed at a time when there was less demand for electrical appliances and devices. It is likely that the original wiring may become overloaded by the demands of a modern household, which can lead to fire and shock hazards.
If you think your home has knob and tube wiring, it is a good idea to have it inspected by a licensed electrician to make sure that it is still in working condition and doesn’t present a danger to your home. Call Mr. Electric today to schedule a home wiring inspection.
